Membrane Transport and Renal Physiology

چکیده
A computational model of porous media at the microscale will be presented. A collection of solid particles is placed within a regular fluid domain. The particles are represented with less detail by a ‘force cloud’ centered at a given point. Internal no-slip conditions are approximately achieved. This method is easy to implement, computationally inexpensive, and may be used to represent complex porous structures. The fluid flow within this domain is governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, a system of partial differential equations that describe conservation of mass and momentum. A comparison of our computation results with some theoretical results demonstrates the validity of the method used to model the porous media. Finally, some simulations of flow through a complex porous media are presented. Organizer: Kevin Anderson NOTE: The Postdoc Seminar is organized by the IMA postdoctoral members, but all interested IMA participants are encouraged to attend. The Seminar meets in Lind Hall 409.

An update on renal peptide transporters.
The brush-border membrane of renal epithelial cells contains PEPT1 and PEPT2 proteins that are rheogenic carriers for short-chain peptides. The carrier proteins display a distinct surface expression pattern along the proximal tubule, suggesting that initially di- and tripeptides, either filtered or released by surface-bound hydrolases from larger oligopeptides, are taken up by the low-affinity ...
متن کاملAmmonia transport in the kidney by Rhesus glycoproteins.
Renal ammonia metabolism is a fundamental element of acid-base homeostasis, comprising a major component of both basal and physiologically altered renal net acid excretion. Over the past several years, a fundamental change in our understanding of the mechanisms of renal epithelial cell ammonia transport has occurred, replacing the previous model which was based upon diffusion equilibrium for NH...
متن کاملEffect of experimentally induced hypothyroidism on sulfate renal transport in rats.
Decreased serum sulfate concentrations are observed in hypothyroid patients. However, the mechanism involved in thyroid hormone-induced alterations of renal sulfate homeostasis is unknown. The objectives of this investigation were to determine the effect of 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU)-induced hypothyroidism in rats on 1) the in vivo serum concentrations, renal clearance, and renal reabsorption ...
متن کاملSodium and calcium transport pathways along the mammalian distal nephron: from rabbit to human.
The final adjustment of renal sodium and calcium excretion is achieved by the distal nephron, in which transepithelial ion transport is under control of various hormones, tubular fluid composition, and flow rate. Acquired or inherited diseases leading to deranged renal sodium and calcium balance have been linked to dysfunction of the distal nephron. Diuretic drugs elicit their effects on sodium...
متن کاملMultidrug resistance protein mrp2 mediates ATP-dependent transport of classic renal organic anion p-aminohippurate.
p-Aminohippurate (PAH) is widely used as a model substrate to characterize organic anion transport in kidney proximal tubules. The carrier responsible for uptake of PAH across the basolateral membrane has been cloned and well characterized, whereas transporters mediating PAH excretion across the brush-border (apical) membrane are yet unknown. In this study we investigated whether PAH is a subst...
متن کاملDefective PTH regulation of sodium-dependent phosphate transport in NHERF-1-/- renal proximal tubule cells and wild-type cells adapted to low-phosphate media.
The present experiments using primary cultures from renal proximal tubule cells examine two aspects of the regulation of sodium-dependent phosphate transport and membrane sodium-dependent phosphate transporter (Npt2a) expression by parathyroid hormone (PTH). Sodium-dependent phosphate transport in proximal tubule cells from wild-type mice grown in normal-phosphate media averaged 4.4 +/- 0.5 nmo...
